Cash App QR
Overview
Cash App (originally Square Cash) is a US mobile-payment app owned by Block, Inc. (formerly Square), launched late May 2013 by Jack Dorsey (also Twitter founder) and Jim McKelvey [3, [us-cro]]. Cash App grew from a simple P2P email-and-debit-card transfer tool into a financial-services super-app — and by 2024 had 57 million monthly active users, US $16.2 billion revenue (+13.2 % YoY), US $5.23B gross profit, and US $283 billion in annual inflows [3]. It is the second-largest US P2P-payment app after venmo-qr, with substantially stronger profitability per user.
Cash App's QR-code layer comes in two flavours: personal cashtag QR codes (CPM — show to identify yourself or receive payment) and Cash App Pay (the merchant-side product launched in 2021 and expanded beyond the Square network in September 2022, letting any online merchant accept Cash App payments via QR scan or button-tap) [2, [us-cro]]. Unique to Cash App: integrated Bitcoin buy/sell + Bitcoin-native payments via the Lightning Network, making it one of the most crypto-native major US payment apps.
History
2009 — Square founded [3]:
- Jack Dorsey (then Twitter CEO) + Jim McKelvey founded Square in 2009.
- Original product: the white Square card-reader dongle that turned any iPhone into a credit-card terminal — built initially for McKelvey's glass-art business after he lost a $2K sale because he couldn't accept American Express.
- St. Louis natives → built the company first in St. Louis, then moved to San Francisco.
Late May 2013 — Square Cash launches [3, [us-cro]]:
- Simple P2P money-sending product.
- Initial proposition: email-only money transfer — users link a debit card and pay anyone with an email address. No intermediary, no app required for the recipient initially.
- This email-first model was structurally different from venmo-qr's social-feed model.
Evolution to a mobile-first app [3]:
- Square Cash quickly evolved into the Cash App mobile-first product.
- Introduced $cashtag — chosen handle like
$jacksmith— as a user-facing identifier. - Added debit card (Cash Card) for ATM withdrawals and POS spending of Cash App balance.
2018 — Bitcoin integration [3]:
- Cash App becomes one of the first major US fintech apps to integrate Bitcoin buy/sell — buy BTC inside the app with funded balance.
- This positioned Cash App ahead of venmo-qr in crypto by 3 years.
December 2021 — Square rebrands as Block, Inc. [3]:
- Reflects the company's expansion beyond Square (the merchant business) into Cash App, TIDAL (music), Spiral (Bitcoin), and Square Financial Services (banking).
- Cash App becomes the dominant revenue and profit driver within Block.
2021 — Cash App Pay launches (Square merchant ecosystem) [2]:
- Lets customers pay Square merchants by scanning a QR code or tapping a button in Cash App.
- Initially limited to in-person Square merchants and online merchants on Square.
September 2022 — Cash App Pay extends beyond Square network US:
- Cash App Pay opens to any online merchant via the Cash App Pay API — not just Square's merchant base.
- This was a structural inflection point — Cash App became a merchant-acceptance product competing with Apple Pay and PayPal at checkout.
2024 — Block financial results [3]:
- 57 million MAU on Cash App.
- US $16.2 billion revenue (+13.2 % YoY).
- US $5.23 billion gross profit.
- US $283 billion in annual inflows.
- Cash App became the highest-profitability segment of Block.
Bitcoin Lightning + AI features (recent) US:
- Cash App Lightning — buy and send Bitcoin via the Lightning Network for instant low-fee payments.
- Cash App Moneybot — AI assistant for budgeting and money management (2024+).
- Bitcoin payments on Square POS announced 2025 — merchants can accept Bitcoin via Lightning at their Square terminals.

Cash App Pay developer integration [4]:
- Web Payments SDK (Square Developer Platform) — Cash App Pay is one of the supported payment methods.
- Works alongside Apple Pay, Google Pay in the same Web Payments SDK.
- Merchants can accept Cash App Pay without separate integration if already on Square's commerce stack.
Bitcoin layer US:
- Bitcoin balance held within Cash App account; buy/sell in-app.
- Bitcoin Lightning — instant low-fee Bitcoin payments via Lightning Network (since 2022).
- Cash App is one of the largest US retail Bitcoin on-ramps.

Implementations & ecosystem
Owner / operator: Block, Inc. (NYSE: SQ), headquartered San Francisco.
Banking partner: Square Financial Services (Block's chartered industrial bank, opened 2021) — provides direct banking for Cash App's banking features.
Issuer: Sutton Bank for Cash Card.
Geographic scope: US + UK — Cash App is one of the few major US P2P apps with an international presence (UK launch 2018).
Cash App Pay merchant integrations [2, 4]:
- Square POS ecosystem (all Square merchants).
- Web Payments SDK for third-party online merchants.
- Major brands: select integrations.
No public open-source SDK for Cash App per se; merchant integration via Square Developer Platform.
Fun facts
- Square Cash born from a glass-art lost sale: Jim McKelvey lost a $2,000 glass-art sale because he couldn't accept American Express — this prompted the Square card-reader, which led to Square the company, which led to Cash App.
- Jack Dorsey's two-CEO era: For years, Dorsey was simultaneously CEO of Twitter and CEO of Block — one of very few people to lead two major public companies simultaneously.
- $cashtag as the brand-defining UX: The
$usernameconvention (e.g.,$elonmusk) became Cash App's defining identifier — easier to remember than a phone number, more personal than an email. - Email-first launch (2013): Original Square Cash worked via email — sender forwarded a payment email to cash@square.com with the amount and recipient. No app needed for the recipient initially. This frictionless onboarding was the original viral mechanic.
- Bitcoin 3 years before Venmo: Cash App integrated Bitcoin in 2018; venmo-qr added crypto in 2021. Cash App's Bitcoin commitment is far deeper — including Lightning, mining via Block's hardware wing, and Bitcoin payments via Square POS.
- Block rebrand (December 2021): Square → Block reflected Cash App overtaking Square (the merchant business) as the primary revenue/profit engine.
- 57M MAU + $283B inflows in 2024: Cash App's per-user financial throughput ($4,965 inflows/MAU) is among the highest of any consumer financial-services app.
- UK presence: Cash App is one of the few US-origin P2P apps with active UK operations — though much smaller than its US footprint.
- Cash App Moneybot AI: 2024 launch of AI budgeting/finance assistant — Block's bet on conversational interfaces for everyday money management.
- Bitcoin Lightning on Square POS (announced 2025): Square merchants can accept Bitcoin via Lightning Network — making Cash App + Square jointly the largest US distribution channel for Bitcoin-Lightning point-of-sale acceptance.

Structural distinction: Cash App's Bitcoin + Lightning + AI strategic stack is unique among major US payment apps.
