E-Kyash
Overview
E-Kyash is Belize's first digital wallet, launched March 2021 by Wallet Factory (Ukrainian/Estonian fintech platform) in partnership with The Belize Bank Limited (BBL) — Belize's largest commercial bank [2, 3, [bz-cro]]. E-Kyash was the first Belizean digital wallet to be fully approved by the Central Bank of Belize after thorough vetting. The platform supports QR-based payments, Business-to-Customer and Business-to-Business transactions, with a network of 750+ stores nationwide accepting cash-ins, cash-outs, and QR-code payments.
E-Kyash won the Silver Award at the 9th annual Global Qorus-Accenture Banking Innovation Awards (December 2022) in the Social, Sustainable & Responsible Banking category — recognising its mass-market financial-inclusion contribution in Belize's underbanked population [3]. The "kyash" name is a phonetic spelling reflecting Belize's English-Creole pronunciation of "cash." Belize is a small Central American economy (population ~410K) with limited banking penetration; digital wallets like E-Kyash provide financial-services access to populations not served by traditional banking infrastructure.
Belize's broader payment-system landscape also includes NBB Pay — a parallel digital wallet from National Bank of Belize, built with Bitt (the Barbados fintech that also built dcash) — making Belize a notable example of multiple competing digital wallets in a small economy.

Fun facts
- "Kyash" Creole spelling: E-Kyash phonetically captures Belize-English-Creole pronunciation of "cash" — culturally-attuned branding that resonates locally.
- Wallet Factory's Ukrainian/Estonian fintech-platform: Cross-continent technology partnership — Ukrainian/Estonian platform powering Belizean wallet. Reflects global fintech-platform marketplace.
- Belize's first Central-Bank-approved digital wallet: Regulatory-first-mover advantage that helped establish E-Kyash brand.
- Qorus-Accenture Silver Award (2022): International banking-innovation recognition for E-Kyash — notable for a small-economy digital wallet.
- 750+ store acceptance network in 410K-population country: Substantial merchant penetration relative to economy size.
- Multiple competing wallets in tiny Belize: E-Kyash vs NBB Pay reflects competitive dynamism in small economies. Compare with countries where a single wallet dominates (bizum Spain, swish-qr Sweden).
- NBB Pay-Bitt connection to dcash: NBB Pay's Bitt technology partner is the same Barbados firm that built the (discontinued) DCash CBDC for ECCB. Caribbean fintech infrastructure landscape is structurally interconnected.
- Belizean dollar pegged to USD (2:1): Belize dollar fixed at 2 BZD = 1 USD — simplifies dollar-economy considerations for E-Kyash.
