Pix Aproximacao
Overview
Pix por Aproximação ("Pix by proximity", marketed in English as Pix Tap to Pay / contactless Pix) is a contactless tap-to-pay capability layer on top of pix, Brazil's instant-payment system operated by the Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) [1, 5]. Instead of opening a banking app and scanning a pix BR Code QR or pasting a Pix copy-and-paste string, the payer brings an NFC-capable phone close to the merchant's terminal, reviews the transaction on the phone screen, and confirms with biometrics — and the payment settles instantly over the existing Pix rail [1, 6].
It is not a new symbology or a new payment network: it reuses the Pix instant-payment infrastructure and is wired into the merchant flow through Open Finance payment-initiation APIs, with the BCB authorising eligible institutions to act as payment-transaction initiators (PTIs) inside digital wallets [1, 3]. For the underlying instant-payment system, Pix keys, and the BR Code QR format, see the pix entry; this page documents only the contactless extension.
History
Pix por Aproximação appears on the BCB's published Pix evolution roadmap alongside Pix Automático, Pix Internacional, and Open Finance integration [2]. The BCB announced contactless Pix for Android via Google Wallet in late 2024, with broader availability to other digital wallets set for early 2025 [7]. The feature became generally available on Friday, 28 February 2025, from which date Brazil's major financial and payment institutions were expected to let customers link their accounts into digital wallets offering the contactless flow [1, 3]. Early participating institutions included PicPay and C6 Bank, with Itaú following, and the rollout was developed with Rede/Itaú and made available to payment acquirers [3, 6].
The base Pix system launched 16 November 2020 (see pix) [[../countries/BR-brazil.md]].
Technical specification
NFC-based contactless flow. Pix por Aproximação uses Near-Field Communication (NFC): the payer's phone must support NFC and the merchant's terminal must be enabled to accept it [1]. In a transaction the merchant enters the amount on the terminal as if generating a QR Code; the terminal then displays the QR Code and transmits the payment data via NFC to the phone, which shows the details for the payer to confirm [1, 6]. Confirmation is by biometrics, password, or facial recognition [1]. A notification of the completed transaction is sent to both the phone and the terminal [6].
Relationship to the QR / copy-paste Pix flows. The data carried is the same Pix payment payload that would otherwise be presented as a pix BR Code QR — contactless Pix essentially delivers the BR Code data over NFC instead of having the customer scan it [1]. This removes the two main friction points of in-store Pix: opening the app and scanning a QR or pasting a key [6]. Acceptance "depends on an update made by acquirers," because terminals must be enabled for the NFC handoff [8].
Open Finance integration. Communication between the digital wallet and the account-holding institution flows through Open Finance APIs, providing standardisation and security, and the service is optional (facultativa) for both providers and merchants [1]. BCB-authorised institutions act as payment-transaction initiators within the wallet [1, 3].
Account selection and limits. The payer chooses which account linked in the wallet executes the Pix [5]. Wallet-based contactless Pix payments are initially capped at R$500 per operation; there is no daily ceiling by default, but the customer can customise the limit at their bank [9].
Security. Beyond the biometric/password/facial confirmation, the BCB framework adds transaction limits for purchases from unknown devices, and a Night Mode (modo madrugada) that blocks personal-account Pix transactions to unknown beneficiaries between 20:00 and 06:00 [6, 4].
Use cases
- Tap-to-pay at physical point of sale — supermarkets, restaurants, and other high-throughput retail where scanning a QR slows the checkout line [1].
- Self-service / unattended terminals — operators have begun deploying contactless Pix at self-service terminals [3].
- E-commerce — a "pay with GPay" button is in development to extend the flow to online checkout while keeping buyers on the merchant's site [5].
Implementations
At launch, contactless Pix is available on Android phones via Google Wallet, with the user selecting the linked account and confirming by biometrics; expansion to other wallets (and platforms such as Apple Pay and Samsung) is anticipated as more providers register with the BCB [5, 7]. Early institutional support includes PicPay, C6 Bank, and Itaú, and the NFC handoff works across major acquirers' terminals — Cielo, Getnet, PagBank, Stone, SumUp among them [6]. Google Wallet's setup requires an NFC-capable phone, a verified identity, and a valid Pix account linked in the wallet [8].
Comparison
vs. card contactless (tap-to-pay). Both tap an NFC phone or card to a terminal, but card contactless routes through card networks (Visa/Mastercard) with interchange and ~1–3 % merchant fees and deferred settlement, whereas Pix por Aproximação rides the Pix instant rail — instant settlement, low/zero merchant cost relative to cards, and a direct account-to-account push initiated via Open Finance rather than a card credential [1, 6]. The R$500 wallet cap and Night Mode are Pix-specific guardrails absent from card contactless [9, 6].
vs. QR / BR Code Pix. Standard in-store pix requires the customer to open a banking app and scan a BR Code QR or paste a Pix key; contactless Pix carries the same payload over NFC, eliminating the app-open and scan steps and shortening confirmation time substantially [1, 6]. The trade-off is the R$500 per-operation cap on the wallet flow versus the higher limits available in app-based QR Pix [9].
Status
Live since 28 February 2025, initially on Android via Google Wallet with a R$500 per-operation cap, expanding to additional wallets and platforms as providers onboard [1, 9, 7]. It is one of the BCB's roadmap features intended to push Pix further into the in-store/P2B segment where cards still dominate; Pix more broadly was projected to overtake credit cards as Brazil's predominant payment method in 2025 (see pix) [5, [../countries/BR-brazil.md]]. No deprecation planned.
