Overview

The Cauzin Softstrip is a 1980s two-dimensional code designed for storing computer data on paper, so that magazines and books could distribute software, text, or graphics by simply printing a pattern that readers scanned back into a computer [1]. It is widely cited as the first commercial 2D barcode format, and is historically important as a direct ancestor of the dense data-carrying matrix codes that followed [1].

History

The Softstrip was introduced in 1985 by Cauzin Systems [1]. The company sold an optical reader and encoding software and pursued partnerships with computer magazines and book publishers to print machine-readable program listings, replacing the error-prone practice of typing in printed source code by hand [1][2]. MacUser magazine named the Softstrip the most innovative concept of 1986, and Cauzin floated ambitions to put Softstrips on cards such as credit or calling cards [1]. Despite the early acclaim, adoption stalled and the format faded within a few years [1].

Technical specification

A Softstrip is a long, narrow 2D code, roughly 5/8 inch wide and up to about 10 inches long [2]. Data is encoded with paired light/dark cells called "dibits": a black-white pair represents one bit value and a white-black pair the other [2]. The strip is organised into a header — a horizontal synchronisation section and a vertical synchronisation section — followed by the data section, and carries a file header (filename, length, type) plus a strip checksum for error detection; positioning marks (a circle and a rectangle) align the reader [2].

Data density was about 1000 bytes per square inch, some 20 to 100 times that of the linear barcodes of the day [1]. A single strip held at most around 5500 bytes — for context, an Apple II floppy held well over 25 times that — and the handheld reader took roughly 30 seconds to scan one strip, after which the user had to reposition it for the next [2].

Use cases

The flagship use case was software-on-paper: printing programs, source listings, text files, and graphics in magazines, computer books, and standalone booklets so readers could reconstruct the files without retyping [1]. Strips appeared in computer magazines and books — for example the 1986 book Animated Algorithms — and in retail "StripWare" booklets [2]. Later applications adapted the format for identification cards and documents encoding text and biometric data [1].

Implementations

Cauzin sold the Softstrip System Reader, an optical scanner, for about $200, and the encoding software — nicknamed the "Stripper" — for under $30 [1][2]. The system worked across the IBM PC, Apple II, and Macintosh, allowing data transfer between those otherwise incompatible platforms [1][2]. The original readers are long obsolete; modern researchers have since reconstructed decoding in software, with a 2021 study decoding over 91% of 1,229 archived strips using convolutional neural networks (rising to about 99% for professionally printed, controlled cases) [2].

Comparison

Compared with later 2D codes such as Data Matrix and QR Code, the Softstrip was visionary but hampered by its era. It carried real file data on paper years before QR existed, but its capacity (a few kilobytes per strip), 30-second scan time, and sensitivity to smeared magazine ink made it impractical as program sizes grew [1][2]. It also required a $200 proprietary reader, creating a chicken-and-egg deadlock: magazines hesitated to print Softstrips until many readers existed, and buyers waited for strips to become common [1]. QR and Data Matrix later succeeded by being far denser, royalty-free or standardised, and readable with cameras already in people's pockets — while the Softstrip was ultimately outcompeted by cheap, capacious floppy disks [1].

Fun facts

The Softstrip embodied the 1980s dream of "software you could mail in an envelope or print in a magazine," with full programs literally inked onto the page [1]. Reviewer David Tebbutt of Personal Computer World (January 1987) judged it well-built but, at £200, "all dressed up, with nowhere to go" — a neat epitaph for a format ahead of its market [2]. The technology persisted in modified form as the Datastrip code for ID documents [1].

Status

Defunct / historic. The consumer Softstrip product died within a few years of its 1985 launch as floppies got cheaper and files got bigger; original readers are obsolete, and surviving strips are now a digital-preservation challenge addressed by software decoders [1][2].
