Overview
Marqeta is a modern card-issuing and payment-processing platform that lets fintechs, platforms and enterprises issue virtual and physical cards and control authorization in real time through an open API [1, us-cro]. It pioneered the "just-in-time" funding model and powers cards for major programs — historically Block/Cash App, DoorDash, Uber, Klarna, Affirm and others — making it a key infrastructure layer behind many consumer wallets.
Marqeta IPO'd on the NASDAQ (MQ) in 2021. Its business is concentrated in card issuing/processing rather than merchant acceptance.
History
2010 — Marqeta founded by Jason Gardner in Oakland, California [2].
2014-2020 — Issuer-processor growth as fintechs and on-demand platforms adopted programmatic card issuing; Cash App and on-demand delivery became flagship programs.
2021 — NASDAQ IPO (MQ) at a multi-billion-dollar valuation.
2022-2025 — Expansion into credit-card programs, embedded finance and international markets (UK, EU, APAC), plus a renewed Block/Cash App agreement.
