2013 — founded as bter.com by Lin Han, one of the early Chinese-market crypto exchanges. 2017 — rebrands to Gate.io and globalizes operations after exiting the mainland China market. 2019 — publishes Merkle-tree proof-of-reserves audits, among the earliest exchanges to do so. 2022–2024 — expands Gate Group brand, derivatives, Gate Wallet (Web3) and regional licensing. 2024–2025 — pursues VASP registrations across multiple jurisdictions while remaining offshore-incorporated.
