Digimarc Barcode
Overview
Digimarc Barcode is an imperceptible digital watermark that carries product-identification data — most often a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) — and is redundantly tiled across the entire surface of a printed package or label, so the data is invisible to humans but readable by point-of-sale scanners and smartphone cameras [1, 3]. It was unveiled by Digimarc Corporation at the National Retail Federation's annual convention on 13 January 2014 [1]. Unlike a conventional printed upc-a symbol, which occupies a dedicated rectangle of package real estate, the Digimarc Barcode "occupies zero space" — the watermark is woven into the package's existing artwork and repeated many times so that any part of the package facing the scanner can be read [1, 3].
The technology rests on Digimarc's long-running digital-watermarking business: an imperceptible, spread-spectrum-style signal added to printed imagery that survives the print-scan channel and is recoverable by an imaging device [2, 4].
History
1995 — Digimarc founded by Geoffrey (Geoff) Rhoads in Beaverton, Oregon [2]. The company commercialised digital watermarking — embedding machine-readable data imperceptibly into images.

Technical specification
Digimarc Barcode is an application of digital watermarking, not a printed glyph [1, 3, 4]:
- Imperceptible signal — a faint, machine-readable pattern (described as a pattern of tiny dots or squares) added into the package's images, graphics, or background so that it is invisible to the human eye [3].
- Redundant tiling — the payload is repeated many times across the entire printed surface, so the package is readable from any orientation and any patch large enough to contain one tile [1, 3].
- Payload — for packaging, the watermark carries a GTIN, supporting the same identifiers as UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8 and EAN-13 under GS1 rules; the GTIN keeps POS, production and supply-chain systems compatible [3].
- Print compatibility — can be applied by offset, laser, inkjet, thermal, flexographic printing, and engraving [3].
- Readers — purpose-built POS scanners and ordinary smartphone cameras (via the Digimarc Discover app or a brand app built on Digimarc's SDK) [1, 3].
The underlying watermarking technique belongs to the spread-spectrum family of digital watermarks, in which the mark is added across the host signal so it is robust to the print-scan channel while remaining imperceptible [4].
Use cases
- Retail point of sale — the headline use case. Because any part of the package can be scanned, checkers do not need to hunt for the UPC; Digimarc reported professional checkers exceeding 36 items per minute versus an industry average of 24 items per minute with traditional UPC [1].
- Mobile consumer engagement — shoppers point a phone at a watermarked item to reach product information, offers, recommendations, reviews, and social links [1].

State honestly: the encoder, the watermark format, and the detection algorithms are closed; third parties cannot generate or read Digimarc watermarks without Digimarc tooling.
Comparison
vs. printed upc-a / EAN — Both carry a GTIN, but a UPC is a visible 1D symbol occupying a fixed rectangle, scannable only when that rectangle faces the laser. The Digimarc Barcode is invisible, tiled across the whole package, and readable from any facing — improving checkout throughput and freeing package real estate, at the cost of being proprietary and requiring imaging-based (not laser) readers [1, 3].
vs. qr-code — QR is a visible, open, royalty-free 2D symbol the consumer can see and choose to scan; Digimarc is invisible and proprietary, designed to be omnipresent rather than a discrete call-to-action. QR competes for the same mobile-engagement use case but with a visible mark and no licensing dependency.
