NBB Pay
Overview
NBB Pay is National Bank of Belize Limited's digital wallet, partnered with Bitt (Barbados-based fintech) — the same firm that built the (now-discontinued) dcash CBDC for ECCB and is associated with other Caribbean CBDC infrastructure [1, 2, [bz-cro]]. NBB Pay was announced December 2020 with soft launch early 2021 and roll-out to all customers and businesses around mid-2021; 25 November 2021 marked entry into the final phase of testing in the form of a private launch to select participants [3]. NBB licensed digital-currency infrastructure from Bitt — making NBB Pay structurally similar to ECCB's DCash + Bitt's other Caribbean CBDC-style deployments.
NBB Pay competes in Belize's competitive small-economy digital-wallet market alongside e-kyash (Belize Bank Limited + Wallet Factory) — illustrating how even a small ~410K-population country can support multiple competing digital wallets. The platform supports customer-to-customer, business-to-business, customer-to-business transfers, bill payment, and mobile-app-only access (no web interface). The structural distinction vs E-Kyash: NBB Pay uses Bitt's CBDC infrastructure technology while E-Kyash uses Wallet Factory's mobile-wallet platform — two different fintech-vendor-tech-stacks supporting Belize's mobile-payment ecosystem.
