Overview

Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but npp is not a QR-symbol standard — it is the Australian instant-payment rail (PayID/Osko/PayTo ride on top). Reclassified as Instant payment. The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.

NPP (New Payments Platform) is Australia's national real-time interbank payments platform, launched 13 February 2018 with PayID (addressing capability) and Osko (first NPP overlay service, operated by BPAY) [1, 2, 4]. By April 2025, NPP had 25+ million PayID registrations and 66+ million accountholders reachable — covering ~90 % of accounts that will eventually be reachable. NPP connects 100+ banks, financial institutions, and fintechs, facilitating ~AUD $6 billion of payments each day [5]. The platform is structurally Australia's foundational instant-payments-rail equivalent to Singapore's fast, UK's Faster Payments, Brazil's pix, and EU's TIPS.

NPP's evolution is structurally instructive: launched 2018 with PayID + Osko; subsequently extended with PayTo (mandate-based payments, since 2022), single-credit-payment limits raised to AUD 1 million (then unlimited), and a 2022 consolidation when NPP + BPAY + eftpos merged into Australian Payments Plus (AP+) — Australia's unified domestic-payments-infrastructure entity. AP+ now coordinates NPP + BPAY + eftpos + PayID + PayTo + ConnectID under single governance — the most-consolidated national-payment-infrastructure-organisational-structure of any developed economy. eftpos QR (eftpos-qr) was deprecated under this consolidation as AP+ rationalised product portfolio.

  • 52M accountholders 1 year post-launch: Among the fastest national instant-payment-rail reach achievements.
  • 66M+ accountholders (Apr 2025) = ~90% reachable accounts: Near-saturation.
  • PayTo as mandate-based innovation: PayTo's consumer-controlled mandate model is structurally distinct from traditional direct-debit + improves on Open-Banking-payment competitors.
  • AUD $6B daily volume: Substantial; comparable to FedNow/RTP US, Pix Brazil, India UPI.
  • eftpos QR deprecated under AP+ consolidation: Product-portfolio rationalisation — eftpos-qr wound down.
  • NPP + Osko + PayID + PayTo + ConnectID: Comprehensive product family under AP+.
