Overview

History

2012/2014 — Coincheck founded in Tokyo by Koichiro Wada and Yusuke Otsuka, launching its exchange in 2014. January 2018 — suffers the NEM (XEM) hack of roughly ¥58B (~$530M), one of the largest crypto thefts ever, prompting major remediation. 2018 — acquired by Monex Group, which rebuilt its compliance and security and obtained full FSA registration. 2022 — announces a SPAC merger to list on NASDAQ via Coincheck Group N.V. 2024 — completes the NASDAQ listing, becoming the first Japan-based crypto exchange to trade publicly in the US.
