Overview

Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but wamd is not a QR-symbol standard — it is a national instant-payment rail. Reclassified as Instant payment. The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.

WAMD (Arabic: "lightning flash") is Kuwait's national real-time-payment scheme, approved by the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) and launched in June 2024, facilitated by K-Net (The Shared Electronic Banking Services Co., Kuwait's national payment gateway under CBK supervision) [1, 2, [kw-cro]]. WAMD enables account-to-account money transfers using just a phone number and is available on the banking application of all local Kuwaiti banks. By May 2025, WAMD surpassed 1 million registered users in its first year of operation — substantial first-year adoption.

The structural significance: WAMD represents Kuwait's central-bank-coordinated modernisation of payment infrastructure — aligned with GCC peer national-payment systems (fawri-plus Bahrain, mpcss-qr Oman, aani UAE, mada Saudi Arabia, cliq-qr Jordan). K-Net's role as facilitator + CBK central-bank backing provide the regulatory + operational + interoperability foundation. K-Net utilized ACI Worldwide's Digital Central Infrastructure solution to build the central payment infrastructure of WAMD — interoperable, countrywide scheme structure. Longer-term strategic initiatives include enabling A2A real-time payments in EFT-POS terminals using dynamic QR codes + WAMD integration with fintech providers and SMEs via QR codes and Request to Pay features. All Kuwaiti banks' banking apps support WAMD — universal participation mandate.
