Overview

eNaira QR is the QR payment scheme of eNaira, Nigeria's central bank digital currency (CBDC) launched by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on October 25, 2021. eNaira is Africa's first official CBDC and is legal tender in Nigeria. The eNaira uses EMVCo MPM-compliant QR codes for merchant payments and supports both online and offline transactions.

QR Format

eNaira QR uses QR Code symbology with EMVCo MPM-compliant UR payloads (URL QR). The QR payload contains the eNaira wallet ID, transaction amount, and CBN digital signature. The same QR standard is used for online and offline transactions (with NFC backup for offline mode).

Status

Active in Nigeria.
