Overview

Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but tips is not a QR-symbol standard — it is the Eurosystem instant-payment rail. Reclassified as Instant payment. The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.

TIPS (Tanzania Instant Payment System) is Tanzania's interoperable instant-payment platform operated by the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) — facilitating transfer of payments between different Digital Financial Service Providers (DFSPs), both banks and non-banks such as e-money issuers [1, 2, [tz-cro]]. By end of 2024, TIPS had processed 453.7 million interoperable retail transactions worth TZS 29.9 trillion with 45 financial service providers connected to the platform. TIPS facilitates interoperable transfers for P2P (person-to-person), P2B (person-to-business), and P2M (person-to-merchant) using QR code technology.

The structural significance: TIPS is Tanzania's central-bank-operated instant-payment rail — built specifically to address fragmentation challenges + provide shared real-time digital infrastructure for low-value transactions with overarching goal of building inclusive, interconnected, robust, real-time payment system that ensures interoperability across FSPs. Mandatory participation for inter-provider transactions ensures comprehensive coverage. TIPS pairs with tanqr (TANQR) — TIPS providing instant-payment rail while TANQR provides national QR-payment standard — together defining Tanzania's interoperable payment-infrastructure. AFI (Alliance for Financial Inclusion) recognition + UNCDF MFI/SACCO onboarding initiatives + BoT September 2025 global financial-inclusion award all illustrate TIPS's structural importance as African instant-payment-system model.
