TEF
Overview
Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but tef is not a QR-symbol standard — it is an instant-transfer rail. Reclassified as
Instant transfer. The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.
TEF (Transferencia Electrónica de Fondos — Electronic Funds Transfer) is Chile's interbank instant-payment system — enabling almost-immediate cross-bank account-to-account transfers [1, 2, [cl-cro]]. TEF was created in 2008 as part of Chile's banking-infrastructure modernisation, moving from manual + delayed mechanisms to virtually-immediate digital fund transfer. Transfers process through the CPBV (Cámaras de Pago de Bajo Valor — Low-Value Payment Chambers), where both banking and non-banking entities can participate to process transfers of less than approximately CLP 50,000,000 in safe and irrevocable manner.
The structural significance: TEF was one of LATAM's earlier interbank instant-payment rails — predating Pix BR (2020), Transferencias 3.0 AR (2021), Bre-B CO (2025). TEF's CPBV-based model enables multi-bank + non-bank participation with checking + sight + prepaid account support — comprehensive instant-payment access. 2024-2025 modernisation context: Chile's payment-modernisation includes PCT (Pagos Cobros Transferencias) + new Sistema de Pagos en Línea developments + Khipu (private bank-to-bank fintech operator). TEF's 2008 vintage + near-immediate settlement + CPBV multi-participant framework make it Chile's interbank-instant-payment backbone — supporting an increasingly sophisticated payment ecosystem.
