Revolut QR
Overview
Revolut QR is Revolut's proprietary QR code payment system used in EU and UK. It covers two distinct modes:
- Revolut Business QR — merchants generate QR codes via the Revolut Business app for in-person payments. Customers scan and pay using Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard, or their Revolut balance. Deployed in 25+ EEA countries.
- Personal QR (Share QR Code) — users share a QR code from their Revolut app to receive personal transfers. The QR encodes the user's Revolut account identifier for direct P2P payment.
Unlike open standards (EPC QR, Pix, PromptPay), Revolut QR has no publicly documented wire format — the QR payload is a Revolut-internal payment order ID or merchant link resolved over HTTPS to Revolut's payment infrastructure.
History
February 2021 — Revolut announced QR code payments for business customers across 25 countries, positioning it as a touch-free, hardware-free alternative to POS terminals. The feature was initially framed as a pandemic-era social distancing tool.
2024–2026 — Revolut Business QR expanded across all EEA countries where Revolut operates, with additional features including Revolut Pay (one-tap QR at Revolut Terminals) and Tap to Pay on iPhone integration.
Technical specification
Revolut QR has no publicly specified payload format. Based on observed behaviour:
- Business QR: likely encodes a payment order ID or merchant-specific URL that Revolut's reader app resolves to a payment confirmation page.
- Personal QR: likely encodes a Revolut account identifier or deep link for P2P transfers.
Revolut also scans and pays open QR standards:
- Swiss QR-bill (SIX standard) — supported for CHF/EUR payments
- EPC/SEPA QR — supported in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Austria, Italy
- Pix (Brazil) — full QR support for sending and receiving
Use cases
- In-store merchant payments — small businesses generate QR codes via the Revolut Business app; no POS hardware required
- P2P transfers — users share their personal QR code to receive money
- Revolut Pay — one-tap payments at Revolut Terminals via QR
- Cross-border acceptance — Revolut QR codes work in 25+ EEA countries
Status
Active across EU and UK. Deployed in 25+ EEA countries for business QR, with personal QR available to all Revolut users.
Cross-border usage
Revolut QR coexists with national QR systems rather than displacing them. In Slovenia, cross-border payment apps using Revolut require QR code conversion tools for local invoice standards, showing Revolut QR operates alongside — not instead of — country-specific payment standards SI.
