Overview

MobilePay is the dominant mobile-payment platform in Denmark and Finland, launched 7 May 2013 by Danske Bank as Denmark's first mobile-payment app [1, [dk-cro]]. As of 1 November 2022, MobilePay merged with Norwegian rival Vipps to form Vipps MobilePay — a Nordic-wide payment platform now serving 12+ million users across Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden with 1.52 billion transactions in 2024 [3, [dk-cro]]. Despite the merger, the MobilePay and Vipps brand names are preserved in each country.

In Denmark specifically, MobilePay serves ~4.5 million users (~75 % of the Danish population) at 200,000+ merchants — making it one of the most penetrated single-app mobile-payment platforms in Europe alongside swish-qr (SE) and twint (CH) [[dk-cro], 3]. The QR-payment overlay supports four distinct QR types (one-time payment, merchant redirect, merchant callback, personal) covering both MPM and CPM modes — a richer QR taxonomy than most peer national mobile-payment apps [1, 2].

History

Background — Danish payment landscape pre-2013 DK:

  • Dankort (since 1983) — Denmark's national debit card; 90 % of Danes have one.
  • Cash usage already low by European standards.
  • No mobile-payment app existed; the gap was clear.

7 May 2013 — Danske Bank launches MobilePay [1, [dk-cro]]:

  • Denmark's first mobile-payment app.
  • Founder: Danske Bank (Denmark's largest bank).
  • Initial proposition: P2P payments by phone number.
  • By end of 2013877,000 downloads in Denmark alone.

December 2013 — MobilePay launches in Finland [1]:

  • Cross-Nordic expansion within 7 months.
  • ~300,000 downloads in Finland within 10 weeks.

2014–2020 — Dominance in Denmark DK:

  • MobilePay grew to ~4 million Danish users — saturated the addressable adult market.
  • Pivot from pure P2P to merchant payments (in-store, online, QR).
  • Failed Norwegian launch (Vipps was already dominant there).

30 June 2021 — Merger with Vipps announced [4]:

  • Danske Bank announces intent to merge MobilePay with Vipps (Norway's leading mobile-payment app, owned by a consortium of Norwegian banks).
  • Pivo (OP Financial Group's Finnish payment app) initially planned for inclusion but withdrew September 2022.

21 October 2022 — All authorities approve merger [4]:

  • EU Commission and national competition authorities approve.

1 November 2022 — Merger closes [3, 4]:

  • New corporate entity: Vipps MobilePay.
  • Norwegian bank consortium owns 72.2 %.
  • Danske Bank owns 27.8 %.
  • Both brand names preserved per country (Vipps in Norway, MobilePay in Denmark/Finland).

March 2024 — Unified app platform [3]:

  • Danish 4.5M users migrated to the unified Vipps MobilePay tech platform.
  • Same backend across all Nordic markets; different consumer brand per country.

2024 — Vipps MobilePay annual results [3]:

  • 12+ million users across NO, DK, FI, SE.
  • 1.52 billion transactions in 2024.
  • 427,000+ sales units (merchants).
  • iOS tap-to-pay: Vipps MobilePay is the world's first non-Apple-Pay tap-to-pay solution on iOS, achieved by leveraging EU DMA requirements that opened NFC access. ~1 million Norwegian users activated tap-to-pay within 5 months.

Technical specification

Vipps MobilePay (MobilePay's modern technical identity) provides four distinct QR types [1, 2]:

QR type Mode Use case
One-time payment QR MPM (merchant displays dynamic QR per sale) POS, restaurant checkout — customer scans, completes payment in their MobilePay app
Merchant redirect QR Static MPM Customer scans static QR with any phone camera → opens merchant website → completes payment via standard checkout
Merchant callback QR Static MPM with backend notification Customer scans static QR → merchant receives notification → merchant initiates payment request to customer
Personal QR CPM (customer displays personal QR) Customer shows personal QR; merchant scans to identify and request payment

Notable technical detail [1]:

  • One-time payment QR: "Completely contactless," "No phone number entry required."
  • Merchant redirect QR: Works with any phone camera — Vipps/MobilePay app not required for the initial scan, broadening accessibility.
  • QR API: Doesn't require URL whitelisting.

Implementation interfaces [2]:

  • QR API: Programmatic generation for merchant systems.
  • Vipps MobilePay Portal: Manual generation for non-technical merchants.

Settlement and rail (Denmark, 2025+) DK:

  • Underlying instant-payment rail: TIPS (since April 2025, migrated from Straksclearing).
  • Denmark became the first non-euro currency on all TARGET Services in April 2025.
  • Currency: DKK (Danish krone).

EMVCo alignment: Public sources do not explicitly state MobilePay QR is EMVCo MPM/CPM compliant. The MPM/CPM terminology is used; technical compliance is not directly claimed.

Use cases

P2P — daily-life payments DK: Splitting bills, sending money to friends — the cardinal MobilePay use case from 2013 onward.

Retail POS [1, [dk-cro]]: 200,000+ Danish merchants accept MobilePay; one-time-payment-QR is the canonical pattern.

E-commerce checkout [2]: Merchant-redirect-QR enables friction-light e-commerce; customer pays without bank-detail entry.

Subscriptions and recurring payments [2]: Merchant-callback-QR supports request-to-pay flows for utility bills, subscriptions, donations.

Charity collection DK: MobilePay is the default donation channel for Danish charities (Røde Kors, Læger uden Grænser, etc.) — personal-QR-on-a-vest is the canonical street-collection pattern.

iOS tap-to-pay (Norway, 2024+) [3]: World's first non-Apple-Pay tap-to-pay on iOS — pioneer use case unlocked by EU DMA.

Cross-Nordic [3]: Since March 2024 unified platform, a Norwegian Vipps user can theoretically pay at a Danish MobilePay merchant (subject to brand-merger interop rules).

Implementations & ecosystem

Owner / operator: Vipps MobilePay AS (Norwegian banks 72.2 %, Danske Bank 27.8 %).

Brand presence by country [3, 4]:

  • Norway — Vipps (since 2015).
  • Denmark — MobilePay (since 2013).
  • Finland — MobilePay (since December 2013).
  • Sweden — joined the platform in 2024.

Note on Sweden: Sweden's dominant mobile-payment app is swish-qr — Vipps MobilePay's Swedish presence is supplementary, not dominant.

Public developer docs at https://developer.vippsmobilepay.com — APIs for payments, QR, checkout, recurring, login, etc.

No fully open-source SDK on GitHub — Vipps publishes some sample code at github.com/vippsas/ but the core SDKs are not OSS.

Fun facts

  • First mobile-payment app in Denmark: MobilePay was Denmark's first mobile-payment app (May 7, 2013) — a remarkably early launch given Apple Pay didn't exist yet and the technical state-of-the-art was still primitive.
  • 877K downloads by end of launch year: For a country of ~5.5 million people, ~16 % download in 8 months is exceptional.
  • The merger that almost didn't happen: Pivo (OP Financial Group's Finnish payment app) was originally part of the merger plan but withdrew in September 2022 — leaving Finland served by MobilePay alone.
  • Brand preservation post-merger: Most cross-border mergers consolidate brands (e.g., Cyota → RSA, Garmin → Garmin). Vipps MobilePay deliberately preserved two distinct brands because each had decade-deep cultural penetration in its home country.
  • World's first non-Apple-Pay iOS tap-to-pay: Vipps's NFC tap-to-pay on iPhone (enabled by EU Digital Markets Act forcing Apple to open NFC) is a regulatory-engineering milestone — a payment company that pivoted faster than peers to exploit a brand-new EU requirement.
  • 1.52 billion transactions in 2024: Per-user average across 12M users = ~127 transactions/year per user — among the highest mobile-payment-app usage rates globally.
  • Charity-collection default: In Denmark, personal MobilePay QR on a vest is the universal street-collection pattern for Røde Kors and other charities — replacing the cash-bucket pattern within a decade.
  • Bank consortium ownership ratio (72.2 / 27.8): The asymmetric ownership reflects the relative market sizes at merger time — Norwegian Vipps had ~4.5M users; MobilePay had ~5.5M Danish + Finnish users; but Norwegian banks contributed more cash/technology assets to the merger.
  • April 2025 TIPS migration: Denmark became the first non-euro currency on all TARGET Services — making MobilePay's underlying rail Eurosystem-grade despite Denmark not being in the eurozone.

Closest peer: swish-qr — both are Nordic-bank-consortium products with near-population-saturation domestic penetration. Vipps MobilePay's cross-Nordic merger gives it a structural advantage swish-qr lacks.

Structural distinction: The four-QR-type taxonomy (one-time / merchant-redirect / merchant-callback / personal) is richer than most national mobile-payment apps, designed for a broader use-case surface than P2P + retail.

Status

Active, dominant in Denmark and Finland [3, [dk-cro]]:

  • 4.5M Danish users (~75 % adults).
  • ~2M Finnish users.
  • 200,000+ Danish merchants.
  • 1.52B transactions across Vipps MobilePay in 2024.
  • March 2024: Unified app platform (Vipps + MobilePay backends merged).
  • April 2025: Underlying rail migrated to TIPS (Denmark first non-euro currency on TARGET).
  • 2024+: iOS tap-to-pay live in Norway (world first non-Apple-Pay).

Outlook: Continued cross-Nordic interoperability between Vipps and MobilePay brands, expansion of iOS tap-to-pay across Vipps MobilePay's full footprint, and possible Swedish market growth (against incumbent swish-qr).
