Overview

iDEAL is the Netherlands' dominant online payment system, launched in October 2005 by a consortium of major Dutch banks and operated by Currence (acquired by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) in October 2023) [1, 2, nl-cro]. It is the most-used payment method in the Netherlands for e-commerce, processing ~1.5 billion transactions per year worth €141 billion in 2024 (~70 % of Dutch e-commerce) NL. iDEAL QR is the optional QR-payment-initiation variant supporting in-app / in-store payment from printed or screen-displayed QR codes, with bank-specific scanning support that has been fragmented across major Dutch banks NL.

The defining 2024–2026 event: iDEAL is being progressively replaced by wero as part of EPI's pan-European payment-sovereignty strategy. EPI acquired Currence iDEAL BV in October 2023; iDEAL is rebranding to "iDEAL | Wero" in January 2026, with the first Dutch webshops migrating in 2026 and full transition to Wero expected by 2027 [nl-cro, 3].

History

Background — Dutch banking-system collaboration [1, 2]: Pre-2005, Dutch banks each had separate online payment redirect systems for e-commerce — fragmenting the consumer experience and complicating merchant integration. The Dutch banking sector (high concentration: top 3 banks ~74 % market share) recognised that a unified national payment standard would benefit all participants.

January 2005 — Currence founded [2, 4]: Eight Dutch banks (ABN AMRO, Rabobank, ING Groep, Fortis, SNS Bank, BNG, Friesland Bank, Van Lanschot Kempen) founded Currence as the organisation to operate Dutch national payment products. iDEAL was Currence's flagship product.

October 2005 — iDEAL launches [1, 4]: iDEAL went live for Dutch consumers. The design: consumer selects iDEAL at checkout → selects their bank → redirects to bank's online banking → confirms payment in their familiar bank environment → returns to merchant with payment-confirmed status. This bank-redirect model was structurally different from card-network checkout flows of the era.

2006 — Brand moved to Currence [2]: The consortium formally moved the iDEAL brand to Currence's governance.

Subsequent growth [nl-cro, 1]:

  • iDEAL became the dominant Dutch e-commerce payment method within a few years of launch.
  • By 2024: 1.5+ billion transactions per year, €141 billion value, ~70 % e-commerce market share.
  • All major Dutch banks participate.

iDEAL QR added (later) NL: The original iDEAL was a checkout-flow product (bank-redirect from web checkout). iDEAL QR added the ability to encode payment-initiation data in a QR code that a consumer scans with their banking app — supporting in-app and printed-invoice payment scenarios beyond pure web checkout.

October 2023 — EPI acquires Currence iDEAL BV [4, 5, 6]: The European Payments Initiative (EPI) — the bank consortium behind wero — acquired iDEAL alongside Payconiq International in coordinated October 2023 deals. The strategic logic: EPI gains the largest Dutch national-payment installed base to leverage for wero's pan-European rollout.

Wero transition timeline [nl-cro, 3]:

Date Milestone
October 2023 EPI acquires Currence iDEAL BV
July 2024 wero launched in Germany
September 2024 Wero launched in France
November 2024 Wero launched in Belgium
2025 Netherlands Wero launch begins
January 2026 iDEAL rebrands to "iDEAL | Wero"
2026 First Dutch webshops switch to Wero
2027 iDEAL expected to fully transition to Wero

Technical specification

iDEAL's structural model is bank-redirect checkout rather than direct payment-rail integration [1, nl-cro]:

Layer Description
Underlying rail SEPA Credit Transfer + SCT Inst (since the Netherlands default-instant adoption)
Settlement Real-time (sub-10-seconds via SCT Inst)
Currency EUR
Standard body Currence → EPI (since October 2023)
Banks All major Dutch banks (ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO, Bunq, Knab, ASN, SNS, De Volksbank, etc.)
Operator (post-2023) EPI Company

Standard iDEAL flow (web checkout, no QR) [1]:

  1. Consumer selects iDEAL at merchant checkout.
  2. Consumer selects their bank from the participating-banks list.
  3. Consumer redirected to their bank's online banking environment (familiar to them).
  4. Consumer authenticates and confirms payment.
  5. Bank routes payment to merchant via SCT / SCT Inst.
  6. Merchant notified of successful payment; consumer returned to merchant page.

iDEAL QR variant NL:

  • Encodes payment-initiation data (merchant, amount, reference) in a qr-code symbol.
  • Consumer scans with banking app camera.
  • Consumer reviews and confirms payment in-app.
  • Settlement via SCT Inst.

Bank-specific QR scanning support fragmentation NL:

Bank iDEAL QR scan support
Rabobank Full — scans any iDEAL QR
ABN AMRO Limited — only scans ABN-AMRO-generated QRs
ING Limited — redirects to tikkie-qr (separate ABN-AMRO-owned app)
Knab Full SEPA QR support
Bunq, ASN, SNS, De Volksbank Full

The bank-specific scanning fragmentation is a well-known Dutch payment-system quirk: not all Dutch banks support the open SEPA QR / iDEAL QR standard uniformly, leading to consumer frustration. This is partly why tikkie-qr (ABN AMRO's separate P2P app) gained dominance in P2P even though iDEAL itself doesn't really compete in P2P — Dutch consumers learned to use Tikkie for "request to pay" scenarios that iDEAL QR could have handled.

Underlying rail evolution NL:

  • Pre-2019: SEPA Credit Transfer (next-day settlement).
  • April 2019: Netherlands becomes instant-payments pioneer — SCT Inst becomes the default for all bank transfers (not an option, the default). Sub-10-second settlement.
  • 2024: 40+ million inter-bank SEPA Instant transfers per month in NL.

Use cases

iDEAL's deployment is Dutch e-commerce checkout dominant, with secondary deployment in mobile / in-store / invoice scenarios [nl-cro, 1]:

  • E-commerce checkout~70 % of all Dutch online payments NL. Dominant for online retail, travel booking, ticketing, software subscriptions. The structural use case from day one.
  • Invoice payment via iDEAL QR — encoded payment-initiation QR on a printed or PDF invoice; consumer scans with banking app.
  • In-app payment — mobile apps redirect to iDEAL flow for one-tap payment from the consumer's banking app.
  • Donation campaigns — NGOs use iDEAL for donation collection, often with iDEAL QR on printed flyers.
  • Bill payments — utility, government, telecom, insurance bills accept iDEAL for one-click payment.
  • Tikkie-as-iDEAL-substitute for P2Ptikkie-qr (ABN AMRO-developed, works with all Dutch banks) handles P2P / request-to-pay scenarios that iDEAL doesn't natively address well.

iDEAL's structural advantage in Dutch e-commerce NL:

  • Bank-trusted environment — consumer pays in their familiar bank app, not via card details on the merchant site.
  • Instant settlement since 2019 (SCT Inst default).
  • Lower fees than card networks for merchants.
  • Universal bank support — every Dutch bank account works with iDEAL.

Implementations

iDEAL's integration is EPI-mediated (post-October 2023); consumers interact via bank apps NL:

Production bank apps NL:

App Bank iDEAL QR scan
ING Mobiel Bankieren ING Limited (redirects to Tikkie)
Rabobank App Rabobank Full
ABN AMRO App ABN AMRO Own QR only
ASN Bank App De Volksbank Yes
SNS App De Volksbank Yes
Bunq Bunq Yes
Knab Knab Yes

Plus other smaller Dutch banks.

Merchant / e-commerce integration:

  • Major Dutch PSPs (Adyen, Mollie, MultiSafepay) offer iDEAL as a standard payment method.
  • International PSPs (Stripe, Worldpay, etc.) offer iDEAL for merchants targeting Dutch consumers.
  • MultiSafepay's iDEAL 2.0 is a recent product enhancement.

No significant open-source library ecosystem — iDEAL integration goes through bank or PSP APIs, not self-service.

Comparison

vs. wero (EPI's pan-European wallet) — Direct successor relationship. iDEAL is being replaced by Wero through the EPI-led transition:

  • October 2023: EPI acquires Currence iDEAL BV.
  • January 2026: iDEAL rebrands to "iDEAL | Wero".
  • 2026: First Dutch webshops migrate.
  • 2027: Full transition expected.

Wero adds: pan-European interoperability (Netherlands-Germany-France-Belgium-Luxembourg + EuroPA partners), NFC POS payments (planned 2026), purchase protection (credit-card-like buyer protections). iDEAL's structural design (bank-redirect for web checkout) is preserved in the Dutch Wero variant; the brand transition is gradual to preserve the substantial iDEAL consumer brand recognition [wero-ref, nl-cro].

vs. bizum (Spain), mb-way-qr (Portugal), blik (Poland), swish-qr (Sweden), twint (Switzerland) — Other European national bank-consortium mobile / online payment systems. iDEAL's structural design is bank-redirect web-checkout-focused rather than mobile-P2P-focused (which is where Bizum / MB WAY / BLIK / Swish / TWINT dominate). iDEAL is the e-commerce-payment specialist of the European bank-consortium-payment family.

vs. tikkie-qr (ABN AMRO, P2P) — Complementary, not competing. Tikkie handles P2P / request-to-pay scenarios (send money to friends, deposit-return at recycling machines, etc.); iDEAL handles merchant checkout scenarios. Both work with all Dutch bank accounts; both contributed to making the Netherlands one of Europe's most-cashless consumer economies [tikkie-ref, nl-cro].

vs. epc-qr (pan-European SEPA QR) — Complementary. EPC QR is for printed-invoice payment initiation across SEPA; iDEAL is for Dutch-specific online checkout via bank redirect. Some Dutch banks support both EPC QR scanning and iDEAL QR — bank-specific [epc-ref].

vs. card networks (Visa, Mastercard, Bancontact) — iDEAL has structurally beaten card networks in Dutch e-commerce (70 % iDEAL share vs much smaller card share). Card networks dominate physical retail POS in the Netherlands; iDEAL dominates online.

Fun facts

The Netherlands is uniquely a "SCT Inst by default" country NL — since April 2019, instant payments are the default (not an option, not a premium feature) for all Dutch bank transfers. >95 % of Dutch payment accounts are reachable for SCT Inst; >40 million instant inter-bank transfers per month. The Netherlands led Europe by ~6 years on instant-payments-as-default. This structural decision is what makes iDEAL's near-instant checkout settlement possible.

iDEAL processes ~1.5 billion transactions per year — roughly 90 transactions per Dutch resident per year NL — among the highest per-capita national-payment-method transaction counts in Europe. The structural reason: Dutch consumers default to iDEAL for online checkout the way American consumers default to credit cards.

EPI's October 2023 acquisitions of Currence iDEAL BV + Payconiq International [4, 6] are among the largest single-coordinated payment-infrastructure deals in European fintech history. EPI deliberately acquired:

  • iDEAL (Netherlands) — largest national-payment installed base in EPI territory.
  • Payconiq (Belgium, Luxembourg) — Belgian-Luxembourg national-payment installed base.

These acquisitions gave EPI ~50 million existing users to convert to wero — without which Wero's organic-launch trajectory would have been far slower.

The "iDEAL QR scanning fragmentation" across Dutch banks NL is a structurally unusual problem — most national payment standards work uniformly across all participating banks. ING's redirect to tikkie-qr and ABN AMRO's own-QR-only scanning are bank-specific commercial decisions that the iDEAL standard itself doesn't mandate. The result: Dutch users encounter inconsistent QR-scanning experiences depending on which bank's app they use, a known consumer-experience pain point.

Dutch banks ABN AMRO, Rabobank, ING, and Fortis founded iDEAL in 2005 [1, 4] — and 20 years later (2025) those same banks are major shareholders in EPI, which now owns iDEAL. The continuity from "Dutch national-payment consortium" (2005) to "European pan-payment-sovereignty consortium" (2025) reflects the same institutional logic at larger scale: bank-consortium-led infrastructure as alternative to US-dominated payment networks.

The "iDEAL | Wero" January 2026 dual-brand transition NL is a carefully-staged consumer-brand-migration strategy. Rather than abruptly replacing iDEAL (which would alienate the consumer base built up over 20 years), the dual-brand phase preserves iDEAL recognition while gradually introducing Wero capability. This is the playbook other EPI countries' brand transitions (German Giropay → Wero, French Paylib → Wero, Belgian Payconiq → Wero) followed less explicitly.

Status

Active, dominant in Dutch e-commerce, transitioning to Wero [nl-cro, 3]:

  • ~1.5 billion transactions / year (2024)
  • €141 billion value (2024)
  • ~70 % Dutch e-commerce market share
  • All major Dutch banks participating
  • EPI-owned since October 2023
  • Transition to Wero: January 2026 dual-brand → 2027 full Wero

Strategic context [nl-cro, 3]:

  • iDEAL | Wero dual-brand phase (January 2026 onwards) preserves iDEAL consumer recognition during Wero introduction.
  • iDEAL → Wero migration is the largest single national-payment-method transition in European fintech history by user count (~1.5 B transactions per year migrating).
  • Wero adds new capabilities (pan-European, NFC POS, purchase protection) that iDEAL doesn't have.
  • Dutch SCT-Inst-by-default continues underneath; the rail doesn't change, only the consumer-facing brand and feature set.

The structural pattern: iDEAL's 20-year run as the dominant Dutch e-commerce payment method is ending as EPI consolidates European payment infrastructure under Wero. The transition is carefully managed; the underlying SCT Inst rail and the bank-consortium governance pattern continue.
