Overview

Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but fawri is not a QR-symbol standard — it is a batched EFT rail. Reclassified as Batched EFT. The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.

Fawri is Bahrain's batched electronic-funds-transfer system, operated by BENEFIT Company under the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) [1, 2, [bh-cro]]. Fawri is the conventional batched Electronic Funds Transfer System (EFTS) — distinct from its faster sibling fawri-plus (launched November 2015, near-real-time). Together, Fawri + Fawri+ form the two-tier Bahraini interbank-transfer infrastructure, with Fawri handling larger-amount batched transfers and Fawri+ handling smaller-amount instant transfers within 30 seconds.

A structurally interesting recent development: CBB has enabled Fawri settlement during public holidays — extending the system's availability beyond its traditional business-day cycle. This public-holiday-availability extension for the RTGS-based Fawri settlement reflects the broader Bahraini push toward 24/7 payment infrastructure. Fawri operates as the higher-amount complement to the per-account-per-day-limited Fawri+ — for transactions above the Fawri+ ceiling (BD 3,000/day), Fawri is the standard rail.

History

Background — Bahraini interbank payment evolution BH:

  • BENEFIT Company founded November 1997 by 17 Bahraini commercial banks.
  • Originally focused on national ATM + POS switch.
  • Expanded into broader interbank-clearing infrastructure including Fawri.

Fawri launch [1]:

  • Fawri (batched EFTS) established as Bahrain's interbank-clearing system.
  • Operated by BENEFIT under CBB authorisation.

November 2015 — Fawri+ launches [[fast-payments]]:

  • BENEFIT introduces Fawri+ as the near-real-time variant.
  • 30-second settlement; per-day-per-account limits.

Modern era — Fawri public-holiday operation [[zawya]]:

  • CBB announces Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) System operation during public holidays — including for Fawri settlement.
  • Daily morning settlement session during public holidays dedicated for Fawri.

Technical specification

Fawri is Bahrain's batched-EFTS interbank-transfer system [1, 2]:

Fun facts

  • Companion to Fawri+: Fawri (batched) + Fawri+ (instant) is structurally interesting — many countries have a single instant rail; Bahrain maintains a two-tier architecture with different settlement-speed/transaction-size trade-offs.
  • Public-holiday RTGS extension: CBB's recent extension of RTGS operation to public holidays reflects the broader trend toward 24/7 payment availability — even for batched higher-value rails like Fawri.
  • Bank-consortium-owned operator (BENEFIT, 17 founders since 1997): One of the oldest continuously-operating bank-consortium payment networks in the MENA region.
