Overview

Venmo is a US mobile-payment service owned by PayPal, founded in 2009 by University of Pennsylvania roommates Andrew Kortina and Iqram Magdon-Ismail [1, 5]. The name combines "vendere" (Latin for "to sell") with "Mo" (short for mobile). After being acquired by Braintree in 2012 for US $26.2M, then by PayPal (via Braintree) in 2013 for US $800M, Venmo grew into a US P2P-payment giant — handling US $230 billion in transactions and generating US $850M in revenue in 2021 alone [5].

The Venmo QR code layer comes in two distinct flavours: personal QR codes (CPM — customer shows their QR; merchant scans to identify the recipient) and business / in-store QR codes (MPM — merchant displays QR; customer scans to pay) [2, 3, [us-cro]]. Venmo's relationship to QR is secondary to its social-payment-feed UX — unlike alipay-qr or wechat-pay-qr where QR is the primary acceptance method, Venmo QR exists as an accessibility layer for in-person and merchant scenarios in a US market that primarily uses NFC (Apple Pay, Google Pay) for tap-to-pay US. The US QR-payment market is estimated at US $3.9 billion in 2024 — a fraction of Asia-Pacific QR volumes.

History

2009 — Venmo founded [5]:

  • Andrew Kortina and Iqram Magdon-Ismail met as freshman roommates at University of Pennsylvania.
  • Initial concept: text-message-based money transfers.
  • Trigger story #1: A jazz show — wanting to buy an MP3 by text message.
  • Trigger story #2: Magdon-Ismail forgot his wallet on a visit to Kortina — they wanted a frictionless way to settle the debt.
  • The name: "vendere" (Latin: "to sell") + "Mo" (mobile).

Early product — text-based money transfers [5]:

  • First version: SMS-based money transfers.
  • Transitioned to a smartphone app shortly after.

Proof-of-concept — Haiti earthquake relief [5]:

  • First major test: raising US $300,000 for The New Life Children's Home after the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

2012 — Braintree acquires Venmo for $26.2 million [5]:

  • Venmo becomes part of Braintree (a Chicago-based payment processor).

December 2013 — PayPal acquires Braintree for $800 million [5]:

  • Venmo becomes a PayPal subsidiary indirectly through the Braintree deal.
  • PayPal preserves the Venmo brand as a distinct product targeting younger US users — explicitly positioned against PayPal-the-app's older demographic.

2014–2018 — Venmo becomes US Gen-Z/millennial default US:

  • "Venmo me" enters US vernacular — the cultural-noun emergence pattern (parallel to tikkie-qr NL, bizum ES, swish-qr SE).
  • Social-feed UX (default-public transactions) drives viral growth among college students.

2018 — FTC settlement on privacy [5]:

  • Default-public-transactions and other privacy practices result in FTC settlement.
  • Visibility controls strengthened in subsequent years; transactions are now private by default.

QR-code feature evolution [2, 3]:

  • Personal QR codes rolled out for P2P — let users find each other on Venmo without exact handle entry.
  • In-store / "Show to Pay" QR codes rolled out for in-person payment at participating retailers (US only).
  • Business profiles + QR codes: merchants can print Venmo QR signage and accept payments from 80M+ Venmo US users.
  • Public sources do not provide an exact QR-code launch date; Venmo's QR functionality matured incrementally from approximately 2018 onward.

Recent expansion [[us-cro], 4]:

  • Cryptocurrency support added 2021 — buy/sell BTC, ETH, LTC, BCH inside Venmo.
  • MasterCard debit card product.
  • Tap-to-Pay for business — Venmo-branded NFC acceptance for small merchants.

2021 statistics [5]:

  • US $230 billion in transactions.
  • US $850 million revenue.

Technical specification

Venmo's QR-code layer is a PayPal-owned proprietary system rather than an EMVCo-aligned national standard [2, 3]:

Layer Description
Operator PayPal (Venmo is a PayPal subsidiary)
Underlying payment rail PayPal / ACH; Venmo balance
Settlement Standard 1–3 days (free), instant transfer 1.75% fee
Currency USD (United States only)
QR types Personal QR (CPM), In-store / Show-to-Pay QR (MPM), Business profile QR
EMVCo compliance Not confirmed; appears proprietary

Two distinct QR flows [2, 3]:

  1. Show to Pay (in-store, MPM-or-CPM hybrid):

    • Customer taps "Show to Pay" in Venmo app → personal QR appears.
    • Merchant scans customer's QR → completes the transaction in their POS.
    • In-store payment available only in US at participating retailers.
  2. Personal QR codes (P2P / find-friend):

    • Permanent personal QR attached to user's Venmo profile.
    • Scanning identifies the user and opens a payment screen.
    • No registration required for scanner — works with any Venmo user.
  3. Business profile QR:

    • Printable QR for merchant signage.
    • Customer scans → enters amount → confirms.

Note on US QR-market structure US:

  • US QR-payment market: US $3.9 billion (2024).
  • NFC dominates in the US: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay are the primary contactless rails.
  • Venmo QR is complementary to NFC, not competitive.

Use cases

P2P — daily life US: Splitting restaurant bills, rent, group expenses among friends. Venmo's defining use case since 2010.

Personal-QR find-friend [3]: New friend at a party? Show your personal QR → they scan → instant Venmo connection.

In-store (US, "Show to Pay") [2]: At participating US retailers, present personal QR for merchant scan. Currently US-only.

Business profile QR for small merchants US: Lemonade stands, food trucks, market stalls — printable signage with Venmo QR.

Crypto buy/sell (since 2021) [5]: BTC, ETH, LTC, BCH purchasable inside Venmo.

MasterCard debit card [5]: Spend Venmo balance anywhere MasterCard is accepted.

Implementations & ecosystem

Owner: PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) — via 2013 Braintree acquisition.

Banking partners: Synchrony (issuer for Venmo MasterCard); various banks for ACH integration.

Merchant acceptance:

  • 2M+ business profiles with Venmo QR (per US country report).
  • Major US chains: select acceptance via Apple Pay-style integrations.

Geographic restriction: United States only — Venmo is not available in other countries (unlike PayPal, which is global).

No public open-source SDK for QR integration; merchant integration is via PayPal/Braintree commerce APIs.

Fun facts

  • Two origin stories: The "jazz show MP3" trigger and the "forgot wallet" trigger are both told by Kortina and Magdon-Ismail in interviews — multiple distinct moments contributed to the founding insight.
  • The Latin etymology: "vendere" + "Mo" — chosen partly because the founders wanted a name without obvious meaning, allowing the brand to define itself.
  • $300K Haiti relief proof-of-concept: An early product validation — proving that text-message-based money transfer could work at scale and for trust-sensitive purposes (charity).
  • The $26.2M → $800M arithmetic: Braintree bought Venmo for $26.2M in 2012; PayPal bought Braintree (with Venmo) for $800M in late 2013 — Venmo arguably accounted for a substantial portion of that valuation uplift in just 18 months.
  • The social feed: Venmo's defining UX innovation was default-public transactions ("Andrew paid Iqram for 🍕") — turning payments into a social feed. This was beloved by users and ultimately produced regulatory blowback (FTC 2018 settlement).
  • "Venmo me" as cultural noun: Like tikkie-qr in Dutch, bizum in Spanish, swish-qr in Swedish — "Venmo me" is an American verb meaning "send me money via Venmo." A marker of category-defining brand penetration.
  • PayPal's two-brand strategy: PayPal preserved Venmo as a distinct brand targeting younger US consumers — recognising that Venmo's social-feed UX and brand identity had value that consolidating into PayPal would destroy. (Contrast with mobilepay × Vipps merger which also preserved both brands per country.)
  • Crypto inside Venmo (2021): Made Venmo one of the largest US fiat-on-ramps for retail crypto — millions of users with already-funded balances could buy BTC in three taps.
  • NFC vs QR in the US: While Asia-Pacific QR markets are measured in trillions of dollars, the US QR market is $3.9B (2024) — and NFC tap-to-pay (Apple Pay, Google Pay) dominates contactless. Venmo QR exists as a US-flavoured layer atop a fundamentally NFC-centric market.
  • US-only: Despite PayPal's global footprint, Venmo remains US-only — an interesting strategic choice attributed to PayPal's reluctance to dilute the Venmo brand outside its cultural home.

Closest peer: zelle-qr — both US P2P, both have QR overlays, both are major-bank-or-PayPal-backed. Zelle has slightly higher volume; Venmo has stronger brand and Gen-Z entrenchment.

Structural distinction: Venmo's social feed is the unique UX feature that no other major P2P-payment app embraced.

Status

Active, dominant US P2P-payment platform [[us-cro], 5]:

  • ~80M US users (estimated).
  • $230B in transactions in 2021, $850M revenue.
  • 2M+ business profiles with Venmo QR.
  • Crypto support since 2021.
  • Tap-to-Pay for business — recent NFC acceptance expansion.
  • In-store "Show to Pay" QR at participating US retailers.

Outlook: Continued US dominance for social-payment-feed use cases; QR remains a complementary (not primary) layer in an NFC-dominant US market; possible cross-border integrations via PayPal infrastructure unlikely to dilute the US-only brand.
