Overview

Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but rts is not a QR-symbol standard — it is a national instant-payment rail. Reclassified as Instant payment. The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.

RTS/X is Montenegro's new generation national payment system, launched 26 May 2025 by the Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG) [1, 2, [me-cro]]. RTS/X represents the most significant functional and technological change since the system's establishment in 2005 — replacing legacy RTS infrastructure with ISO-20022-aligned online-clearing-enabled modern payment infrastructure. The structural significance: RTS/X enables interbank transactions of up to €1,000 to be processed throughout the day without waiting for fixed clearing cycles, providing users almost immediate access to their funds.

The structural arc: From mid-October 2025, the system operates on weekends; from July 2026 with TIPS Clone platform introduction, payments will be available 24/7 — bringing Montenegro into the modern instant-payment era. 6 October 2025: Montenegrin banks begin operational use of SEPA payment system — major milestone aligned with EU-integration ambitions. RTS/X is part of Brazil's Pix + Montenegro's RTS/X "pushing real-time payments worldwide" narrative — PYMNTS-documented evolution. Montenegro is the second non-EU country (after Bulgaria) to actively pursue EU-aligned payment-system infrastructure, leveraging EU-membership-aspiration positioning. The CBCG-coordinated rollout combines RTS/X domestic instant-payment + SEPA integration + planned TIPS-Clone 24/7 — comprehensive payment-system modernisation programme.
