TakaPay
Overview
Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but Takapay is not a QR-symbol standard. It is reclassified as
Card— a bangladeshi national card scheme (bangladesh bank, nov 2023). The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.
TakaPay is Bangladesh's first national local-currency card scheme, introduced by Bangladesh Bank on November 1, 2023 and unveiled by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina — designed as a viable local alternative to international card services (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) to reduce dependency on international cards + save foreign currency [1, 2, [bd-cro]]. TakaPay Card transactions are settled only through the National Payment Switch of Bangladesh (NPSB) under Bangladesh Bank's supervision — providing a reliable + efficient domestic payment ecosystem.
The structural significance: TakaPay joins the South Asian + MENA national-card-scheme cohort: RuPay (India), PakPay (Pakistan), LankaPay (Sri Lanka), Mada (Saudi Arabia), Meeza (Egypt), Shetab (Iran), MIR (Russia) — illustrating the structural pattern of emerging-market central-bank-led national card schemes aimed at reducing forex outflow + asserting payment sovereignty. Bangladesh Bank's stewardship + initial 13-commercial-bank adoption (including state-owned Sonali Bank + private-sector City Bank, BRAC Bank) provides foundation for TakaPay adoption. Bangladesh's payment landscape is dominated by bKash mobile money (Bangladesh's largest mobile-money platform with 75M+ users) + Nagad (postal MNO mobile money) — TakaPay provides bank-issued debit-card alternative complementing mobile-money infrastructure.
