ZIPSS
Overview
Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but zipss is not a QR-symbol standard — it is a real-time gross-settlement rail. Reclassified as
RTGS. The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.
ZIPSS (Zambia Interbank Payment and Settlement System) is Zambia's real-time gross settlement (RTGS) system, managed + operated by Bank of Zambia (BoZ) in its capacity as settlement provider [1, 2, [zm-cro]]. ZIPSS is an electronic payment system in which processing of transactions for settlement takes place continuously on a transaction-by-transaction basis in real time — designed primarily to improve management of payment risks related to high-value payments while also able to process transactions of any value.
The structural significance: ZIPSS provides final + irrevocable real-time settlement with negligible credit + settlement risk because it's based on pre-funding of payments before payment instruction is issued. Membership open to all banks operating in Zambia with direct connection — comprehensive coverage. Anyone with a bank account at any BoZ-registered commercial bank qualifies to make a transfer through ZIPSS. ZIPSS is the foundational interbank-settlement rail complementing Zambia's mobile-money + retail-payment infrastructure (nfs National Financial Switch, Airtel Money + MTN MoMo Zambia + ZICTA Zambia mobile money operators).
ZIPSS Operating Rules October 2025 illustrate ongoing modernisation. Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) RTGS linkage provides regional cross-border RTGS integration — Zambia connected through SADC RTGS system, joining South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, others.
