DBS PayLah! — Mobile Wallet Research Report

Research Date: 2026-06-04 Status: Complete Slug: paylah Operator: DBS Bank Ltd Country: SG (Singapore)

Overview

DBS PayLah! is a mobile wallet and payment application operated by DBS Bank (Singapore), the largest bank in Southeast Asia by assets.[^1] It was launched in May 2014 as one of Singapore's first consumer-facing mobile wallet services, initially offering person-to-person (P2P) fund transfers for DBS and POSB customers outside the bank's internet banking platform.[^2][^3] Over the years, PayLah! has evolved into Singapore's leading lifestyle and payment super-app, supporting QR code merchant payments, bill payments, rewards redemption, ride-booking, food ordering, and cross-border QR payments across multiple ASEAN countries and China.

PayLah! is the most prominent wallet integrated into Singapore's SGQR/SGQR+ unified QR ecosystem, alongside OCBC Digital and UOB TMRW.[^4][^5] It is also a key player in cross-border QR interoperability, enabling PayLah! users to scan and pay at over 77 million acceptance points across Malaysia (DuitNow QR), Indonesia (QRIS), Thailand (PromptPay QR), and China (UnionPay QR).[^6][^7][^8][^9]

History

May 2014: DBS launched PayLah! as a stored-value mobile wallet for P2P transfers.[^2][^3] At launch, only DBS and POSB customers could use the service, with a daily transfer limit of S$999.[^2][^3] The service allowed users to send and receive funds outside of internet banking, using either mobile number or PayNow QR.[^2][^3]

2014–2016: PayLah! expanded to include QR code merchant payments, becoming an early adopter of QR-based P2M (person-to-merchant) payments in Singapore. The app integrated with NETS QR, then the dominant domestic QR network operated by NETS (Network for Electronic Transfers).[^4]

2018: Singapore's SGQR initiative launched, co-owned by MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) and IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority). PayLah! became a core participant, able to scan and pay at any SGQR-enabled merchant using NETS QR, PayNow QR, or other scheme-specific QR codes embedded within the unified SGQR label.[^10][^11]

2019: PayLah! expanded beyond banking customers. Singaporeans and Permanent Residents without a DBS/POSB account could now register using Singpass (Singapore's national digital identity system).[^7]

2020–2023: PayLah! added lifestyle features including ride-booking, movie ticketing, food ordering, and a Stamp Card rewards system that tracks merchant loyalty purchases within the app. It integrated with FavePay QR for cashback promotions.[^7]

November 2024: SGQR+ launched, expanding from the original SGQR to accept 24+ payment schemes including overseas wallets and foreign cards. PayLah! continues to be the primary Singapore wallet for scanning SGQR+ labels.[^5][^12]

Cross-border expansion:

  • China (UnionPay QR): Over 40 million merchants worldwide.[^8]
  • Malaysia (DuitNow QR): Integration with major Malaysian financial institutions including Maybank (MAE), Boost, Touch 'n Go, Public Bank, and others.[^6]
  • Thailand (PromptPay QR): Coverage at over 8 million merchants, including BTS Skytrain ticketing.[^7][^9]
  • Indonesia (QRIS): Coverage at over 26 million merchants, popular in Batam, Bintan, and Bali.[^8]

QR Format and Specification

SGQR / PayNow QR Integration

PayLah! integrates with Singapore's SGQR standard, which is based on the EMVCo QR Code Specification for payments.[^10][^11] The SGQR label contains encoded data for multiple payment schemes (NETS QR, PayNow QR, credit cards, etc.), and PayLah! allows users to select their preferred payment scheme when scanning a multi-scheme SGQR.[^4]

SGQR scanning flow in PayLah!:

  1. User opens PayLah! and taps "Scan"
  2. Scans the SGQR label
  3. App presents available scheme options (PayNow, NETS, credit card, etc.)
  4. User selects preferred scheme (or uses default last-used scheme)[^4]
  5. Enter amount (for static QR) or confirm (for dynamic QR)
  6. Authenticate and complete

SGQR Data Model

Per the NETS/MAS SGQR specification, a single SGQR label encodes:

  • Merchant identification (MCC, merchant name, location)
  • Per-scheme account routing information (one set of fields per accepted payment scheme)
  • Optional transaction amount (for static QR)
  • Cryptographic check digit (per EMVCo)

PayLah! reads the SGQR payload and presents scheme selection based on the schemes it supports and the user's preferences.[^4]

PayNow QR Details

PayNow is the MAS-run instant fund transfer scheme. PayNow QR codes encode:

  • Creditor Identifier: Mobile number (+65), NRIC/FIN (SXXXXXXXA), UEN (business), or VPA (virtual payment address)
  • Transaction Type: P2P or P2M
  • Optional Amount: For P2M dynamic QR
  • Currency: SGD

PayLah! supports both scanning PayNow QR codes and generating PayNow My QR codes for receiving funds.[^4][^7]

NETS QR

NETS QR is the domestic QR standard operated by NETS (Network for Electronic Transfers). It is now subsumed under SGQR but continues to function independently. NETS QR uses:

  • Merchant ID (MID) and Terminal ID (TID) embedded in QR
  • Dynamic QR for P2M with per-transaction generation
  • Static QR for fixed-amount transactions
  • Transaction confirmation via NETSBiz App (merchant-side)

Cross-Border QR

PayLah! cross-border QR payments conform to EMVCo specifications, ensuring interoperability with foreign QR standards:[^6][^7][^8][^9]

  • DuitNow QR (Malaysia): EMVCo-compliant, tagged to 13+ participating financial institutions
  • PromptPay QR (Thailand): EMVCo-compliant, tagged to participating Thai financial institutions
  • QRIS (Indonesia): EMVCo-compliant, Bank Indonesia standard
  • UnionPay QR (China): UnionPay's proprietary format, EMVCo-aligned

Currency conversion for cross-border payments:

  • Exchange rate: Wholesale interbank rate or government-mandated rate[^7]
  • Markup: 2% on top of foreign exchange rate[^6][^7][^8][^9]
  • Conversion currency: SGD (PayLah!'s base currency)

Static vs. Dynamic QR

Type Description PayLah! Handling
Static QR Fixed merchant info, no amount User enters amount after scanning
Dynamic QR Per-transaction, includes amount User only scans and authenticates

  • Specific user count / download figures not found in publicly available DBS sources
  • PayLah! and PayNow are distinct: PayLah! is the wallet app; PayNow is the underlying instant transfer scheme
