Overview

Azimo was a London-based digital cross-border remittance service, founded in 2012, that allowed senders in Europe to transfer money to recipients in 200+ countries via bank deposit, mobile money and cash pickup [1]. It was one of Europe's early digital-remittance challengers. In 2022, Azimo was acquired by workforce-payments company Papaya Global, and the consumer remittance service was subsequently wound down, with Azimo's technology and licenses folded into Papaya's B2B payments operation [1, 2].

2020-2021 — Profitability + scale [1]: Reaches profitability and ~2M customers as a focused digital remittance player.

2022 — Acquired by Papaya Global [2]: The Israeli workforce-payments unicorn acquires Azimo for its licenses, tech and team.
