TPA Code
Overview
TPA Code is Angola's QR-code-enabled Terminal de Pagamento Automático (Automatic Payment Terminal) — a new functionality on the Multicaixa POS network allowing payment of purchases via QR Code using the Multicaixa Express (MCX) mobile application without needing a physical multicaixa card [1, 2, [ao-cro]]. The feature was rolled out by EMIS (Empresa Interbancária de Serviços — Angola's interbank-services company) on the existing Multicaixa POS terminal network. About 50,000 TPAs already have this functionality, representing 40% of the universe of 190,000 terminals available in the Angolan market — substantial roll-out scale.
The structural significance: TPA Code allows cardless POS payment via QR + smartphone — eliminating need for physical card-present + insertion or contactless tap. The flow:
- Operator inserts the amount in the TPA (no card needed).
- User opens MCX Express App + presses "purchases" button.
- Points phone camera at QR code on TPA device.
- Validates purchase.
Benefits per EMIS:
- Speed.
- Security (no physical card exposure).
- Sustainability (reduction in physical card use).
EMIS-operated TPA Code complements broader Multicaixa ecosystem (Multicaixa Express, Multicaixa Gateway de Pagamentos Online for e-commerce). The 50K-out-of-190K TPA deployment represents Angola's substantial physical-POS-infrastructure modernisation. The TPA Code is QR-on-existing-POS rather than separate QR scheme — efficient deployment leveraging existing physical infrastructure.
