SPEI
Overview
Note on classification. This entry was originally bucketed as a QR standard, but spei is not a QR-symbol standard — it is the underlying Mexican settlement rail (codi is the QR layer). Reclassified as
Instant payment. The wiki shows no playground because there is no QR payload to encode; the slug is retained to avoid breaking incoming links.
SPEI (Sistema de Pagos Electrónicos Interbancarios — Interbank Electronic Payment System) is Mexico's foundational real-time interbank-payment infrastructure, created 13 August 2004 by Banco de México (Banxico) as the backbone of Mexico's payment system [1, 2, [mx-cro]]. SPEI replaced the earlier SPEUA (Expanded Use Electronic Payment System) which ceased operating a year later (2005). 6 out of 10 Mexicans use SPEI, enabling >13.7 billion digital transactions annually — one of the largest national real-time-payment-system transaction volumes globally.
The structural significance: SPEI is the underlying instant-rail beneath Mexico's broader payment-modernisation including codi (Cobro Digital — Mexican QR system) + DiMo (Dinero Móvil — phone-number-addressed). SPEI's 24/7 instant settlement enabled Mexico's mobile-payment ecosystem to flourish. Mexico is one of Latin America's most mature instant-payment markets — with SPEI predating peer Latin American systems like Brazil's pix (2020) by 16+ years + Colombia's emerging Bre-B by 20+ years. The combination of Banxico's SPEI rail + CoDi QR-payment overlay (2019) + DiMo phone-addressed addressing comprehensively covers Mexico's modern payment scenarios.
