QR Code
Overview
QR Code (Quick Response Code) is the world's most widespread 2D barcode standard, originated 1994 by Masahiro Hara of Denso Wave (subsidiary of Toyota Group's Denso Corporation) for automotive-parts tracking [1, 2, 3]. The technical specification is now standardised as ISO/IEC 18004:2015 (current version), with prior versions dating back to ISO/IEC 18004:2000. Denso Wave holds the patent rights but has chosen not to exercise them — making QR Code royalty-free for use anywhere worldwide + driving its explosive global adoption in payment systems, marketing, ticketing, identification, manufacturing tracking, augmented-reality triggers, vaccination certificates, and countless other applications.
The structural significance: QR Code is the foundational 2D barcode underlying virtually every modern QR-payment standard discussed throughout this encyclopedia — from China's unified-cross-border-qr to India's upi-qr QR layer to Indonesia's qris to Thailand's thai-qr/PromptPay to EMVCo's MPM (Merchant-Presented Mode) + CPM (Customer-Presented Mode) QR Code Specifications. The EMVCo QR Code Specifications, leveraging ISO/IEC 18004 QR Code as encoding layer, define the payment-data structure inside the QR Code that allows international interoperability across payment networks.
Key QR Code characteristics:
- Data capacity: Up to 7,089 numeric characters / 4,296 alphanumeric / 2,953 bytes / 1,817 kanji.
- 40 versions (sizes from 21×21 to 177×177 modules).
- 4 error-correction levels (L/M/Q/H — 7% to 30% data recovery).
- Reed-Solomon error correction: Damaged QR codes still readable.
- Position-detection patterns (3 corner squares): Enable rotation + skew tolerance.
- Module sizes scale to allow printing on tiny labels to massive billboards.
QR Code Variants:
- Micro QR Code (micro-qr) — smaller, lower-capacity for space-constrained applications.
- iQR Code (iqr) — rectangular form factor.
- SQRC — restricted-readability for private data.
- Frame QR — frame around image (used for branding).
- HCC2D + others — color-extended variants.

Use cases
Payment systems [wiki-qr]: WeChat Pay, Alipay, UPI, every QR-payment standard discussed in this encyclopedia.
Marketing + advertising [2]: Print → digital bridge.
Ticketing + boarding passes [2]: Airline, transit, event.
Identification + access control [2]: Digital ID, vaccination certificates, building access.
Manufacturing + supply chain tracking [3]: Original Toyota use case.
E-commerce + URL sharing [2]: Web-redirect.
Cryptocurrency wallets [wiki-qr]: Bitcoin + crypto addresses.
EMVCo MPM + CPM payment-data structures [emvco]: International standardised payment-data inside QR.
Implementations & ecosystem
Owner: Denso Wave (Toyota Group).
Standardisation bodies: ISO/IEC, AIM, JIS.
Major QR-payment specifications building on QR Code:
- EMVCo MPM + CPM Specifications.
- qris (Indonesia), thai-qr/PromptPay (Thailand), upi-qr (India), unified-cross-border-qr (China), khqr (Cambodia), tanqr (Tanzania), tr-qr-code (Türkiye), upn-qr (Slovenia), tarusqr (Brunei), saqr (Saudi Arabia), narae-card (North Korea), and 100+ other QR-payment standards globally.

Fun facts
- Invented 1994 by Masahiro Hara at Denso Wave for automotive-parts tracking: Origins.
- Denso Wave holds patents but doesn't enforce: Royalty-free worldwide.
- "QR" stands for "Quick Response": Hara wanted fast-scanning.
- 3 position-detection patterns inspired by historical printing: Rotation tolerance.
- Reed-Solomon error correction: 30% damaged code still readable.
- 40 versions × 4 error-correction levels: 160 size+ECC combinations.
